The Mezuzah Guide
What Is a Mezuzah?
A mezuzah (Hebrew for "doorpost") is a small case fixed to the doorpost of a home. Inside is a scroll with the words of the Shema - "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One" - from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21.
It answers God's command to "write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates" (Deuteronomy 6:9). For more than 3,000 years it has turned the doorway into a daily reminder of God's Word, His protection and our love for Him - each time we come and go.
The History of the MezuzahHow to Hang a Mezuzah
Four simple steps to bless your doorpost.
1. Choose the side
Stand outside the room facing in. The mezuzah goes on the right-hand doorpost as you enter.
2. Find the height
Mark the start of the upper third of the doorpost - about shoulder height - on the side nearest the street or hallway.
3. Set the angle
Slant the top toward the room (a common Ashkenazi custom) or hang it upright (a common Sephardi custom).
4. Say the blessing
Say the blessing, then fix the mezuzah in place with screws or strong mounting tape.
The Mezuzah Blessing
ברוך אתה ה' אלהינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו לקבוע מזוזה Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu likbo'a mezuzah. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to affix a mezuzah.
Many Christian and Messianic families also pray over their home as they hang the mezuzah - dedicating the doorway to the Lord with the words of Joshua 24:15: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Which Doors Need a Mezuzah?
Tradition places a mezuzah on the front door and on the doorway of each living room in the home - bedrooms, the kitchen, a study. Bathrooms, closets and very small storage spaces are traditionally left without one.
Most families start with the front door - the place where every arrival and departure passes beneath God's Word.
Jewish, Christian & Messianic Homes
The mezuzah began in Jewish homes, and it remains a cherished part of Jewish life. Today many Christian and Messianic believers hang one too, as a sign that their home belongs to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
That is why our olive wood mezuzahs come with a choice of symbols - the Shin, the cross, the Shema and the Messianic Seal. Choose your symbol.
