Why We Only Use Olive Wood

We do not make metal or plastic mezuzahs. We chose one material on purpose: olive wood is natural, beautiful and full of meaning. The olive tree appears throughout Scripture - from the olive leaf brought back to Noah, to the olive oil that lit the menorah - and it remains one of the enduring symbols of the land of Israel.

A mezuzah is affixed to the right doorpost (as you enter), in the lower part of the upper third of the doorway. In the Ashkenazi custom it is tilted with the top pointing toward the inside of the room. Our Mezuzah Guide walks you through it step by step.

Each mezuzah comes with a decorative printed scroll of the Shema in its clear tube. It is not a handwritten kosher klaf. For a kosher mezuzah, buy a klaf from a certified sofer and insert it into the tube in place of the printed scroll.

Traditionally, every living-space doorway of a Jewish home requires a mezuzah, with the exception of bathrooms and small closets. Most families begin with the front entrance and add to interior doorways over time.

Each mezuzah ships with clear double-sided tape, so you can mount it without drilling. Clean and dry the doorpost first, then press the mezuzah firmly in place. The blessing (bracha) said when affixing it is in our Mezuzah Guide.

Olive wood is a natural material, so it is happiest on indoor doorways or on an entrance that is covered from direct rain and strong sun. For an exposed front door, mount it in a sheltered spot to keep the wood and the scroll at their best.
